Tried playing my own analog horror game on a CRT… nearly shat myself
A while ago I posted asking whether 16:9 or 4:3 was better for an analog horror game on reddit. The responses were pretty split—some people loved the immersive feel of widescreen, others swore by the claustrophobic, retro vibe of 4:3.
So I decided to test it for myself.
I dug out my 34-inch Sony Trinitron CRT, hooked up the build, turned off every light in the room… and hit play.
Holy hell.
The scanlines, the low hum, the weird flicker—it didn’t just support the horror, it became part of it. The whole thing felt like I was summoning something through the screen instead of just playing a game.
By the time I hit the first scare, I was gripping the armrest and seriously reconsidering my life choices.
Was it terrifying? Yes.
Was it effective? Also yes.
Would I recommend it? 100%.
Retro horror devs: if you’ve got access to a CRT, give it a shot. You might surprise yourself (and terrify yourself in the process).
